Tanzania plans mandatory travel insurance

Tanzania has announced plans to introduce a mandatory travel insurance fee of US$44 (R795) for all foreign visitors entering the country.

Announced in the 2025/2026 fiscal budget, the new policy will provide coverage for medical emergencies, accidents, baggage issues, and other incidents. According to Business Insider Africa, the non-refundable insurance fee is expected to be administered through the National Insurance Company (NIC) and appointed agents.

Citizens of East African Community countries will be exempt. Southern African Development Community members may also be exempt but this is yet to be confirmed.

The announcement mirrors mandatory insurance implemented by Zanzibar in October 2024, where all foreign visitors were also required to purchase travel insurance. Travellers to Zanzibar are charged $44 (R795) per adult and $22 (R397) per child aged 3-17. Insurance must be purchased through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation.
