The Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban is to get a R236 million upgrade, adding a range of new features to position it as a premier tourist destination.

eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba announced that the 60 000-seat stadium – originally constructed for the 2010 FIFA World Cup – would receive routine maintenance as well as several enhancements to "maintain its world-class standard".

At a media briefing on October 24, Xaba said the council had already approved the R236 million budget to refurbish the 15-year-old stadium.

“Our goal is to make this iconic stadium a must-visit attraction in the city,” he added, with hopes of boosting tourism in eThekwini.

The planned upgrades include:

  • An expanded viewing platform with 60% more floor space and a cantilevered glass floor for an ‘air walk’ experience.
  • A redesigned sky car that will now be accessible to disabled persons and able to operate in higher winds, increasing availability.
  • Enhanced access to the Big Swing for easier launch access.
  • A new zip line ending at People’s Park, offering a spot for post-adventure refreshments.
  • A panoramic compression ring walk and sea-facing bungee jumping options.
  • Upgrades to the arch and bowl lighting, reinstating the arch lights with new colour-changing options.

“These upgrades will not only secure the stadium’s commercial viability but will also enhance safety for residents and visitors. It aligns with our vision to build resilient infrastructure that keeps pace with technological advancements," said Xaba.

The renovations are expected to be completed in time for the 2025 holiday season. Xaba reassured stakeholders that the stadium remained structurally sound and would continue to host major events during the upgrade process, which had been certified by engineers.
