FOLLOWING a spate of
terror attacks across the
continent, the European Union
could update its freedom of
movement rules for the coming
three years to allow member
states to reintroduce border
controls for security reasons.
A proposal from the European
Commission is on the table,
although it is still to be debated
and amended by the Council
and the European Parliament.
Spokesperson for the EU,
Eduardo Santander, told TNW
that there would be no impact
on travellers. “Border controls
will be implemented only in
exceptional situations when
countries are confronted with
serious security threats, and
the use of border controls will
be subject to strict conditions.”
“The exceptional
circumstances that we see
now, such as the increased
terrorist threat, have led us to
propose a Schengen Border
Code more fit for purpose in
this new day and age,” said
first vp of the EU Commission
Frans Timmermans.
