AFRICAN low-cost
carrier, fastjet, and
Mozambican national
carrier, LAM, have signed a
first-of-its-kind Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) in
Africa to explore long-term
commercial co-operation.
The MOU aims to
significantly grow aviation in
Mozambique, strengthening
LAM as a regional carrier.
“The pact will pave the
way for fastjet and LAM
to collaborate on key
commercial drivers,
from codeshare and
interline agreements, to
engineering and protection
of passengers,” Nico
Bezuidenhout, ceo of
fastjet, told TNW. “The
MOU lays the foundation
for full economic leverage
of a very bright future and
fulfilment of the Government
of Mozambique’s Whole of
State aviation objectives.”
Antonio Pinto, ceo of LAM,
believes that the publicprivate
partnership will
also prove to be beneficial
to tourism, economic
development and trade
in Mozambique.
Nico says fastjet has
enjoyed positive load factors
since launching domestic
flights within Mozambique on
November 3 last year. “We
are the first low-cost carrier
to launch in this market
and, to date, it has been
tremendously positive for our
brand.”
He did not comment on
whether or not the MOU
between fastjet and LAM will
pave the way for fastjet to
launch flights between South
Africa and Mozambique.
