Wildfires raging across Sicily have damaged an archaeological site and led to resorts being evacuated.

On Monday, July 24, Catania on the east coast registered 47,6 °C.

Just north of Catania, wildfires have devastated the area of Carruba di Riposto, which is rich in vegetation and popular for its agritourism. According to euronews.com, the resorts of Donna Carmela, San Antonio and Galea have been evacuated as a precaution.

On the west coast near Trapani, resorts and hotels in San Vito Lo Capo have also been evacuated.

The popular archaeological park of Segesta, home to some of Italy’s important ancient buildings and the Fifth Century BC Doric Segesta Temple, has been damaged by fires that engulfed the site on Monday night.

After a fire ignited close to Palermo’s Falcone Borsellino Airport on Monday evening, air traffic was halted until midday on Tue as poor visibility affected arriving flights.
