Flying food goes fabulous

12 Jan 2021
Michelin two-star chef, Tom Kerridge

Cattle-class airline food is generally nothing to be celebrated, even if one prepays for it.

Now, British Airways has tapped into the global foodie phenomenon and has announced that Michelin two-star chef, Tom Kerridge (who is also a TV personality with a large following), has developed a signature gourmet light meal menu for short-haul Euro Traveller-class passengers.

Wave goodbye to bland, flabby sandwiches and soggy bread rolls. How about the Ham Hock and Smoked Cheddar Sandwich? There is a Spicy Cauliflower Tortilla too, and a Chicken and Bacon Brioche. A Steak and Ale Pie and a Brie Ploughman’s Sandwich also sounds mouth-watering. They are all around £4,50 (R94) each and all certainly look like a promising bite.

These, along with a selection of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, can all be pre-ordered on a pre-paid basis from the Skybird Café Menu on the BA website. A free snack is currently provided in Euro Traveller class, (a breakfast bar or a packet of crisps and a bottle of water) and must also be ordered from the Skybird Café. No food or beverages outside of pre-orders will be available in Euro Traveller on a European short-haul flight.

The move marks British Airways’ renewed focus on the short-haul customer experience, which includes the completion of a full WiFi roll-out across its Airbus short-haul fleet and the ability to pre-order duty-free items directly to customers’ seats through its inflight retail site, Highlifeshop.com.
