Airlines have few reasons to celebrate in the times we are in, but Qantas certainly had reason to break out the champagne yesterday, on the occasion of its 100th birthday.
Qantas was founded in 1920 when two recently returned World War One servicemen and a local grazier decided to start an airline.
“And while this has probably been the toughest year in our long history, it’s also a timely reminder of how far we’ve come. From humble beginnings in outback Queensland, carrying mostly mail, we grew to become the national carrier of Australia, flying 50m people a year. We’ve had the honour of being part of so many journeys – and we thank you for being such a crucial part of ours,” said the airline in a release.
