Hawaii is considering reducing cruise ship calls to meet transport emission reduction goals, according to a draft by the Department of Transportation.
The plan includes reducing calls based on levels from 2023:
- 2030: Reduce total cruise calls by 50% and large cruise ships (more than 3 000 passengers) by 75%.
- 2035: Reduce total cruise calls by 75% and large cruise ships (more than 3 000 passengers) by 100%.
- 2040-2045: Limit the cruise calls to 75% below 2023 levels.
As cruise ship schedules are typically planned two years in advance, the draft states that reductions in cruise activity will likely not be implemented until 2027.
