Heathrow braces for summer

Heathrow Airport has said it is ready for the peak summer period, despite warnings that strikes around Europe could cause major disruptions.

Heathrow catered for 37,1 million passengers in the first six months of this year, with transatlantic travel continuing to drive passenger numbers.

In the first half of this year, the airport’s North American traffic increased by almost 50% year-on-year to reach 9,3 million passengers, while traffic to EU destinations increased by 34% to reach 12,2 million passengers.

Heathrow says its service levels have been high so far, with average security queues of under five minutes across its terminals. CEO John Holland said: “I am very proud of the way that everyone at Heathrow has been working together to deliver excellent service at our busiest time of year.”

According to BTN Europe, the settling of a long-running pay dispute with security workers last month has eased the airport’s operations.
