India to ease visa regulations

The Indian Tourism Ministry has moved to ease visa applications for visitors to the country, improve access and thereby boost foreign tourist arrivals.

A Planning Commission has called a joint meeting of the Ministries of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Tourism and the National Security Advisor in the first week of October to discuss a simplified visa regime.  Details on the implementation and implication are expected to follow.

The Ministry is also looking at an online system application similar to that now in force in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka offers electronic visas on arrival (VoA) to all nationalities, except those of the Maldives and Singapore who are exempt from visa requirements. The ministry is also likely to propose extending the VoA facility to visitors over the age of 60.
