Comparing salaries in the retail travel industry – February 2021 with February 2022 – shows something of a leap in the fortunes of South Africa’s travel agents. Our February 2021 and 2022 salaries surveys showed that in February 2021, 21% of respondents said they were unemployed due to COVID. By February 2022, that had fallen to 15%.

In February 2021, 22% of agents said they were earning below 20% of their previous salary. In February 2022, this number had dropped to 8%.

In February 2021, only 13% of respondents said they were earning 100% of their previous salary, in February 2022, this number had risen by 116%, to 28% of agents earning 100% of their 2019 salaries.
