Japan tourism tentatively begins

Japan has partially reopened for tourism.

The government has announced that foreign nationals entering Japan for a short-term stay for tourism are now permitted, as of June 10.

According to the International Travel Health and Insurance Journal, visitors from 98 countries are now allowed to enter Japan on fully escorted group tours with set itineraries run by licensed Japanese tour operators.

Japan classifies countries as blue, yellow or red for COVID.

Travellers from countries classified as blue do not need to submit a vaccination certificate, take an on-arrival test, or isolate on arrival.

The same requirements apply to travellers from countries classified as yellow, who have a vaccination certificate, as those from countries classified as blue.

Travellers from countries classified as yellow without a vaccination certificate, and all travellers from countries classified as red need to take a test on arrival.

Travellers from red countries without a vaccination certificate must quarantine for three days at a facility. Travellers who have a vax certificate from red countries and those without a certificate from yellow countries must quarantine for three days at home.

South Africa is currently classified as blue according to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website.

All international travellers need proof of a negative PCR test taken 72 hours prior to departure and adequate COVID-19 medical travel insurance.

There is a daily cap on the number of visitor arrivals, according to CNBC. This was doubled from 10 000 to 20 000 on June 1.
