Kenya seeks new backers for NBO expansion

Kenya is turning to international development groups to finance a US$2bn (R35,1bn) expansion of Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta Airport after it cancelled a deal with India's Adani Group.

Adani Group’s founder was indicted in the US for allegedly paying bribes to secure Indian power contracts that misled US investors. Last year, aviation workers went on strike to oppose the Adani Group’s bid to lease and renovate the airport.

Kenya is now seeking new ways to finance infrastructure projects at the airport.

Speaking to reporters last week, Transport Minister, Davis Chirchir, said the Japan International Cooperation Agency, China Exim, KFW, the European Investment Bank, and the African Development Bank had been contacted as potential backers, according to Reuters.

The airport expansion includes a second runway and a new terminal building. Once funds are secured, the government will then look for a contractor to carry out the work.
