Lanseria has introduced an automated boarding gate system in its domestic terminal. The system, known as “Tap and Fly,” is the first of its kind for domestic travel in South Africa and aims to streamline passenger boarding processes.

“This rollout represents a significant step in our journey towards becoming a SMART airport,” said Rampa Rammopo, CEO of Lanseria International Airport. “The Tap and Fly system will not only reduce boarding times but also allow our staff to focus on delivering a high standard of customer service.”

Developed in partnership with FlySafair, the system allows passengers to scan their boarding passes or QR codes at the automated gates. Standard ID verification and luggage check-in procedures remain in place, as required by aviation regulations.

Rammopo highlighted the system’s successful testing. “We are confident in its readiness for public use. Passengers can expect a smoother experience during the busy festive season.”

The initiative is part of LIA’s broader SMART airport strategy, which includes plans for biometric systems and self-service bag drops. “This is just the beginning,” Rammopo said. “In the coming years, we aim to introduce advanced technologies that enhance security and streamline processes further.”

The system will also be extended to restricted staff access areas, replacing manual ID checks with digital permits and biometric authentication. “The focus is on improving efficiency without compromising security,” Rammopo added.
