The Lufthansa Group and Ryanair have both signed an MoU with global energy and chemicals group OMV for the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), according to FlightGlobal. Both airlines will begin taking supply at the start of next year.
The Lufthansa Group’s deal with OMV means it will take supply of more than 800 000 tonnes of SAF from 2023 to 2030. The companies intend to expand their existing partnership by adding new locations for SAF production and offtake as well as new technologies. OMV has been supplying SAF to the LH group’s Austrian Airlines at Vienna International Airport since March.
The group aims to halve its nett CO2 emissions (those seen in 2019) by 2030 and has the ultimate goal of achieving a carbon neutral balance by 2050.
Meanwhile, Ryanair’s deal ensures access to up to 160 000 tonnes of SAF from OMV over the next eight years. According to the deal, OMV will supply the fuel to Ryanair at airports across Germany, Austria, and Romania.
