London Heathrow has requested permission from the UK Civil Aviation Authority to increase its airline and passenger fees to recover the costs associated with the planning phase of the airport’s expansion and its third runway.
According to Simple Flying, the airport charges airlines an average of £28,50 (R674) per passenger and is lobbying to increase this to £33,30 (R787) in 2027, but airlines are pushing back against the planned fee hike.
According to the airport, the planning expenses amounted to £1 billion (R23,7 billion), which included environmental assessments, legal advice, architectural design, land surveys and public consultation activities, promoting the airport’s request for higher charges to recoup the costs.
The CAA has yet to publish its decision on the request.
