Mauritania introduces e-visas

15 Jan 2025

On January 5, Mauritania launched an electronic visa (e-visa) system for international travellers visiting the country.

A statement made by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to South Africa informed South Africans that, from January 5, all visitors were required to obtain a compulsory e-visa before boarding their flight to Mauritania.

The e-visas can be obtained through the official Mauritanian National Agency for the Population Register and Secure Titles website. The website offers e-visas for durations of 30, 60 and 90 days.

Visa applicants must provide their full name, date of birth, nationality, profession, email address, phone number, and purpose of stay as well as date of arrival, desired number of entries and passport details. Applicants must also submit a passport-style photo and a copy of their passport, valid for at least six months.

After receiving the visa approval from the portal, the document, bearing a QR code, must be printed and presented to security personnel. The visa fees must be paid upon arrival in Mauritania.

South Africans previously required a visa-on-arrival to visit Mauritania.
