Monday Smile: Injured penguin rescued during kayak tour

A kayak tour off Mouille Point, Cape Town, turned into a rescue mission after an injured African penguin jumped on to one of the kayaks.

Marine biologist Kirshia Govender was leading a tour when the penguin surfaced out of nowhere and began circling the group’s kayaks. Govender explained on Instagram that the penguin expressed unusual behaviour and as they got closer, it hopped on her kayak and into her arms.

She noticed the bird was injured on its abdomen and decided to take it back to shore and transport it to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB).

News24 reported that the penguin was recovering at SANCCOB, going through necessary rehabilitation procedures and would be released soon. SANCCOB has warned the public to be cautious when approaching seabirds as their sharp beaks could be dangerous.
