New Zealand has announced plans to charge foreign tourists a fee to visit some of its popular tourist sites.

During a speech over the weekend, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said tourists could be charged between NZ$20 (R213) and NZ$40 (R425) per person to visit the country’s natural attractions, according to Stuff.

The government is considering introducing the fee at Cathedral Cove (Coromandel Peninsula), Tongariro Crossing (North Island), Milford Track (Fiordland) and Mount Cook (South Island), where international travellers comprise 80% of visitors. It could be expanded to other high-volume attractions in the future.
