THE Transnet Heritage Foundation's 'grand old lady' of the sky, a 1930s Junker Ju 52 aircraft or Tante Ju (Aunty Ju) as she is affectionately known, was flown from Johannesburg International Airport to her new home at the Swartkop Air Force Base in Pretoria earlier this week.
This signified the end of a six-week-long transfer of the SA Historic Flights operation from South African Airways (SAA) to the Transnet Heritage Foundation (THF).
THF, which also operates the Eastern Cape-based Union Limited luxury steam train, was also recently awarded its Aircraft Operators Certificate, Aircraft Maintenance Organisation licence and its training licence.
Operating a fleet of vintage aircraft, including the Ju 52, two DC 4 Skymasters and two DC 3 Dakotas, SA Historic Flights offers a number of luxury air safaris to several Southern African destinations.
