This response by AJ was posted on our story: Outbound travellers increasingly bypass JNB:
The number-one reason why our clients don't want to fly via OR Tambo is baggage theft concerns. Whether it's true or not, the perception that it's a theft hub precedes it and OR Tambo urgently needs to do more to resolve this and reassure people.
There's also a general feeling of lacking security – too many people just wandering about, watching or approaching pax – sometimes aggressively - to ‘help’ with porterage or directions for a fee. The airport is enormous and poorly signposted.
It's not the layover time – people generally don't mind transiting at airports like DXB or DOH. We've had clients who will gladly spend many hours longer travelling just so they can avoid JNB. Fix the security and make it a pleasant place to transit and people won't mind.
