Réunion Island: An exceptional destination for discovery

Located 800km east of Madagascar, Réunion Island is a French overseas department that fascinates visitors with its exceptional diversity. This 2 512 sq km volcanic island, nicknamed ‘the intense island’, offers a striking concentration of tropical landscapes and cultural riches.

An exceptional natural heritage

The terrain of Réunion is impressive in its variety. Dominated by Piton des Neiges, the highest peak at 3 071 metres above sea level, the island is home to three spectacular natural cirques: Mafate, Salazie, and Cilaos. These geological amphitheatres, listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites, offer breathtaking views and are a paradise for hikers.

To the east, Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most active volcanoes, continues to shape the island with its regular eruptions. Its lava flows create striking lunar landscapes, attracting volcanologists and visitors from around the world. With its natural enclosure, this effusive volcano poses no danger to the population or visitors.

The coastline reveals a mosaic of contrasting beaches: golden sand in the west protected by coral reefs, black-sand beaches in the south, and steep, wild cliffs. This geological diversity is reflected in the lush vegetation, from the primary forests of the island's highlands to the tropical gardens of the coastline.

A unique cultural crossroads

With a population of 860 000, Réunion perfectly illustrates Creole coexistence. The island harmoniously blends African, European, Malagasy, Indian, and Chinese heritage. This diversity is clearly evident in the religious landscape: colourful Tamil temples, Chinese pagodas, mosques, Catholic and Protestant churches coexist in harmony. All religions are present and respected on the island, demonstrating its exemplary tolerance.

This richness is also reflected in the colourful local architecture, the varied traditional festivals and, above all, in the exceptional cuisine.

Réunionese cuisine delights with its mixed flavours: pork curry, rougail sausages, samosas, achards... Each dish tells the story of the people who have made Réunion their home.

A paradise for outdoor activities all year round

With more than 70 outdoor activities available all year round thanks to its tropical climate, Réunion is a dream destination for thrill seekers and nature lovers. The exceptional volcanic landscape offers a unique playground: hiking in the cirques, climbing on the ramparts, canyoning in the lush gorges, or even paragliding over the lagoons.

Adventure lovers can enjoy mountain biking on the Hauts trails, caving in the lava tunnels, or discovering the seabed while scuba diving. The Indian Ocean also offers water sports such as sailing, transparent kayaking, scuba diving, and even whale watching from June to October.

This diversity of activities, combined with a climate that allows them to be practised year-round, makes Réunion an incomparable outdoor destination in the Indian Ocean.

A destination accessible from South Africa

For South African travellers, Réunion Island is a particularly accessible destination of choice. South African passport holders do not need a visa, which greatly facilitates travel. Air Austral operates two direct flights a week from Johannesburg, making this pearl of the Indian Ocean easily accessible in a three-and-a-half-hour flight.

This geographical and administrative proximity makes Réunion an ideal getaway for discovering an authentic French territory without the usual constraints of international travel.

A modern and dynamic economy

A French department since 1946, Réunion benefits from modern infrastructure and a European social system. High-quality roads between the sea and the mountains offer spectacular views and a smooth network for exploring the island freely and safely.

The island is also developing its expertise in renewable energy, taking advantage of its exceptional sunshine and constant trade winds.

Réunion brilliantly combines Creole authenticity and French modernity, wild nature and sustainable development, making it a unique place where tradition and innovation come together in harmony.
