San Francisco Airport to close runway for construction

San Francisco International Airport is set to close Runway 28L on September 7 for 20 days to refurbish a runway.

The airport has warned travellers to expect delays during this period of up to two hours, with short- haul flights likely to be most affected. The airport says airlines have reduced or re-timed flight schedules to reduce demand during peak periods.

A large section of the runway will be reconstructed and lighting and drainage infrastructure replaced.

The runway is expected to reopen on September 27.
