Seasonal haze in Nigeria disrupts flights

Flight operations at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos will be disrupted until the end of February.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, confirmed that flights to and from Lagos may result in flight diversions and, in many cases, cancellations, due to extreme weather conditions.

Seasonal Harmattan winds, which blow from December to February, have reduced visibility across West Africa.

Some international carriers are diverting to neighbouring countries, however the Ministry advises that all flights should be rerouted to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The Ministry of Aviation says it is replacing outdated landing systems to ensure that aircraft can eventually land with almost zero visibility.
