Soft hiking goes viral

Soft hiking is the latest social media trend to have originated on TikTok.

According to traveldailymedia.com, this kind of hiking takes a more relaxed approach compared with traditional hiking, where walkers and climbers push themselves to the limit by walking long distances or undertaking taxing climbs. The idea is to focus on taking things slowly and enjoying the experience.

The concept offers travellers flexibility as they don’t have to fulfil the pressures and stress associated with outdoor adventures. It encourages simple enjoyment of nature or even taking photographs to capture moments, activities or the environment.

It encourages those who may feel overwhelmed by a challenging outdoor activity or who may not be able to keep up with more active groups to go on their own, slower adventures. It supports the idea of physically slowing things down, and to focus on breathing and be more focused on the environment.

It also inspires travellers to connect with local culture and take the time to enjoy the unique offerings of each destination, support the local economy, respect and preserve the local environment.

Manchester-based TikTokers Emily Thornton and Lucy Hird, who coined the term, said: “A soft hike can be challenging, and it can be difficult, but it's about being kind to yourself mentally and physically and not just rushing from point A to point B in record time.  Take in your surroundings, listen to your body and enjoy nature."
