Spanish tourist hotspots flooded

Flash floods in Spain have triggered travel warnings at popular holiday destinations, including Barcelona, Ibiza, Madrid, Andalucia, Alicante and Valencia, according to euronews.com.

Certain areas had more rainfall in a single day than in an entire month, with 14 parts of the country being placed under yellow warning by Spain’s meteorological office.

Madrid has been devastated by rain since Thursday, May 25. Water leaked through the ceiling of Madrid Airport and flooded runways, while commuters had to dodge water pouring into metro stations and drivers were trapped in their vehicles on flooded highways.

The badly-affected southeast region of Murcia is currently under the more severe orange rainfall warning, where cars being swept down the streets were reported.

Travellers are advised to keep an eye on weather warnings and local media updates for flight and train disruptions.
