Thailand delays departure tax

Thailand has postponed plans to introduce a THB1 000 (R540) departure tax on air travellers as the government seeks to protect tourism growth amid economic uncertainty and rising energy costs.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas said the government would hold off on the proposed levy to maintain tourism momentum during the fourth quarter, a key period for the country's travel industry.

According to TravelMole, the proposed tax would apply to passengers of all nationalities departing Thailand by air, with airlines expected to collect the charge alongside ticket purchases. However, the measure has not been approved or implemented, and no revised introduction date has been announced.

The government is assessing the economic outlook and the impact of higher energy prices, which have increased pressure on airline operating costs. Officials have warned that an additional charge could place a further financial burden on airlines and travellers while potentially affecting Thailand's competitiveness as a destination.
