Train travel round-up

Great Rail Journeys launches walking tours

Great Rail Journeys is adding escorted walking tours to its rail itineraries in Austria, Spain and Switzerland in early 2026.

Tours include the eight-day Catalonia’s Coast & Culture itinerary, the 10-day Lake Maggiore & Italian Valleys and the nine-day Austrian Alps, Tyrol & Alpbach.

The itineraries will combine rail travel, scenic walks and excursions such as boat trips, city tours and vineyard visits. The walks will be led by local guides, with two tours available for each destination.

Group sizes will be limited to 24 people, with a dedicated tour manager.

Tokyo trains to link airport and attractions

New express trains will link Tokyo’s Narita Airport with the Tokyo Skytree in around 30 minutes. The services are expected to launch in 2028.

Direct services would shorten the current 45-minute trip by about 10 minutes and allow passengers to reach Tokyo Skytree without transferring to a local line, the Keisei Electric Railway President said in an interview with Kyodo News.

The 634-metre Skytree is a broadcasting and observation tower, with a shopping mall, aquarium and other attractions.

Germany and Poland rail operators expand services

Germany’s Deutsche Bahn and Poland’s PKP Intercity will increase long-distance trains between the two countries from December 14. Direct daily connections will rise from 11 to 17.

According to RailMarket News, the new timetable includes:

  • A new twice daily Leipzig-Wrocław-Kraków-Przemyśl service, which reaches the Polish-Ukrainian border. It will be the first time Leipzig connects to southern Poland directly.
  • Eurocity night trains will connect Berlin with Przemyśl via Wrocław and Kraków, and another with Berlin and Chełm via Łódź and Warsaw.
  • The Chopin night train between Munich and Warsaw will be extended to Kraków and Przemyśl, providing a direct connection from southern Germany to southern Poland.
  • Two new trains will be added between Berlin and Warsaw, which will run every two hours.
