UAE suspends visas for three African countries

Countries continue to tighten travel measures linked to Ebola, with the UAE suspending visas for three African countries and the US urging Europe to impose stricter restrictions.

Last week, the UAE suspended all visa issuance for nationals from the DRC, Uganda and South Sudan.

The UAE has also restricted entry for anyone travelling from those countries, including via transit. Entry is only permitted to travellers who have spent more than 21 days outside the affected countries before arriving in the UAE.

US urges stricter measures

The Trump administration is urging European countries to tighten controls on travellers from Ebola-affected nations, warning that failure to act could result in travel restrictions being imposed on Europe.

According to the US Department of State, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently discussed coordination and response efforts to Ebola during a call.

An official from the department told AP News that if European nations did not take action, transatlantic travel could be affected. The official said the US was calling for financial support to combat the disease as well as common sense restrictions on travel from affected areas.

The US currently has enhanced screening and entry restrictions in place, banning foreign nationals from entering the country if they have visited the DRC or Uganda in the past 21 days.
