United grows Pacific network

United Airlines is to launch new routes to Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong and Manila, according to travelpulse.com.

The carrier already has indirect flights to Manila but will start direct flights from San Francisco International Airport on October 29.

"We will be the first US airline to ever have service between the mainland United States and the Philippines," said United Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, Patrick Quayle.

On October 28, the airline will start a direct daily service from Los Angeles to Hong Kong. Due to the Ukraine war, it had to postpone its Newark-Hong Kong flights as they had to overfly Russian airspace. Quayle said the flights would be reinstated once the conflict ended.

In addition to its flights to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, United will resume flights from Los Angeles to Tokyo Narita Airport in late October. "For the first time, we will have two daily flights between Tokyo and Los Angeles," Quayle said.

From October 29, the airline also will start a second flight from San Francisco to Taipei.

Quayle said United had expanded the routes as VFR travel was popular, and saw potential for business travel to increase as well.
