Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has revealed more details about its most sustainable super ship to date, the SS Emilie.
As the brand’s first new build since 2020, the SS Emilie has been designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating a range of features to minimise environmental impact. This includes energy-efficient systems as well as advanced water and waste management technologies.
The SS Emilie’s sustainability features include:
- An optimised hull and bow design for improved fuel efficiency and smoother navigation.
- Advanced data and navigation systems to enhance energy efficiency.
- Engine aftertreatment systems that reduce harmful emissions.
- Heat recovery systems that utilise engine cooling to heat water, reducing energy consumption.
- Battery packs for peak saving, storing excess energy from generators or shore power to minimise fuel usage and prevent power waste.
- New gym equipment in the ship’s fitness centre, with reduced electrical reliance.
On the SS Emilie, guests can take part in a variety of sustainability-focused ‘Make Travel Matter’ excursions and experiences.
Along the Rhine, guests can join a Refugee Canal Cruise in Amsterdam led by expert guides sharing stories of cultural resilience. They can visit a dairy farm practising sustainable cheese-making, and explore other green initiatives via electric city tram and sustainably powered water taxis in the Netherlands.
On selected Danube itineraries, there is a visit the world’s largest walkable wooden sphere to learn about local conservation, and sampling traditional cuisine at a countryside Salas (traditional farm estates found in Eastern Europe).
