The US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has issued an interim order reducing the number of flight arrivals and departures at Newark Liberty International Airport due to ongoing construction.
Effective immediately, the airport is limited to a maximum of 28 arrivals and 28 departures per hour while daily construction continues on Runway 4L/22R, the airport’s longest runway used for long-haul, widebody aircraft.
The reduced schedule will remain in effect until June 15, when daily construction ends. However, Saturday construction will continue until the end of the year, and during this time, the reduced cap will remain in place. On all other days after June 15, the cap will increase slightly to 34 arrivals and 34 departures per hour, until October 25.
“Our goal is to relieve the substantial inconvenience to the travelling public from excessive flight delays due to construction, staffing challenges, and recent equipment issues, which magnify as they spread through the National Airspace System,” said Acting FAA Administrator, Chris Rocheleau.
According to the statement, the FAA may change the hourly limits if it determines that Newark can accommodate more flights.
