US warns Europe over flight caps

The US is considering retaliatory action over European airport flight caps aimed at reducing noise.

In a statement, the US Department of Transportation said it was monitoring countries that it believed were not complying with air transport agreements. In particular, it is keeping a close eye on European countries to ensure that airport noise control procedures are fair and that no unjustified operational restrictions are imposed.

Currently, Amsterdam Schiphol is the only EU airport expected to limit flights. From November, the annual number of flights will be reduced from 500 000 to around 478 000. Airlines could lose take-off and landing rights they currently hold.

According to NL Times, this could violate aviation agreements with Delta Air Lines. As a result, the US could impose countermeasures that could affect KLM.
