Venice’s smaller canals have dried up almost completely, frustrating tourists and those trying to use the canals as transport. This is due to a long period of ebb tides, linked to a lingering high-pressure weather system over Italy.
Ambulance boats have had to tie up far from their destinations, forcing medical crews to carry stretchers for long distances.
So far, there has been little Alpine snow melting this year, contributing to the drying up of rivers and lakes in northern Italy.
