Will Bali ban new hotels?

Authorities in Bali are proposing a moratorium on the construction of tourism accommodation in Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan.

The ban is envisaged to last for up to two years to combat overtourism, according to the Acting Governor of Bali, Sang Made Mahendra Jaya.

He said the moratorium would apply to the construction of hotels, villas, discotheques and beach clubs in the Sarbagita area.

A meeting with the central government will be held soon to discuss the implementation of the regulations. “Hopefully after the meeting, there will be a presidential instruction,” he said.
