AI now protects rhinos

Thanda Safari Big Five game reserve in KZN has developed AI-driven technology that will be used to help combat rhino poaching.

According to Technology Times, Thanda Safari has used a variety of techniques, such as foot collars and horn pods, to keep track of its Black and White rhino populations in the past, however a more complex solution was needed, as these methods have drawbacks.

New collars with AI capabilities can now continuously observe, analyse, and learn to recognise behavioural patterns unique to each rhino. The collar will send an immediate alert to the ranger’s cellphone when it detects any abnormal behaviour, including fighting, mating, giving birth or illness. It also uses GPS technology to pinpoint the exact location of the rhino, enabling a quick response and investigation.

‘For security reasons, this system is crucial in helping us catch poachers in the act,” said Mariana Venter, Wildlife Operations Co-Ordinator at Thanda Safari.

“Additionally, it generates valuable data for tracking rhino movements, and monitoring their health and all-round wellbeing, thereby enabling us to learn more about their habitats and differing home ranges. This is particularly relevant for the elusive Black rhino. Favouring thick bush, they are difficult to monitor and, as a result, we can experience long periods with infrequent sightings.”
