Big ben falls silent

THE bells of London's Big Ben fell silent on Saturday, August 11, as maintenance on the Westminster clock tower began. The clock's chimes will not be heard for six weeks, until September. The planned works are part of a programme, known as the Great Clock, in preparation of the world-famous landmark's 150th anniversary in 2009.
