South African Airways (SAA) will suspend flights between Johannesburg and Hong Kong from Saturday, November 23 until December 14.
The airline says it needs to recover from losses incurred on the route, which used to operate four times weekly, and refocus its resources.
SAA plans to implement a re-accommodation policy for customers booked on services to and from Hong Kong.
November pay will be delayed – SAA
SAA staff have been advised to expect a salary delay for the month of November.
According to reports, SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali is quoted saying that the airline advised personnel that it would not be able to pay salaries for November on the normal scheduled payment dates.
SAA’s frail financial status has only been worsened by the week-long strike led by members of the National Union of Metalworks and the South African Cabin Crew Association.
The airline is relying on a R2 billion capital investment to fund daily operations, and part of the funding would go toward the payment of salaries.
