China has reopened access to Mount Everest in Tibet for foreign climbers for the first time since 2020.
According to a report from CNN, the China Tibet Mountaineering Association will issue permits to 300 non-Chinese climbers this year, pending an official statement from China’s government.
Since the closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, travellers have continued to access Mount Everest from the better-known Nepal side. The Tibet route is also considered the slightly safer of the two.
Tour operator Alpenglow Expeditions has already scheduled a climb up Everest on April 25 using the Tibet trail. The window to make the climb is a small one that typically falls between late April and mid-May.
