Germany launches transport deal

05 May 2023
Comments | 0

Germany has launched a €49-per month (R989) nationwide transport ticket.

The pass gives holders entry to all local and regional public transport throughout the country.

The Deutschlandticket as it is known, is intended to give Germans some relief from the rising cost of living and also to encourage residents to use public transport rather than their own vehicles, in order to reduce carbon.

Tourists to the country are also eligible for the pass. While regional travel is included in the pass, long-distance travel is excluded.

The tickets are bought online, as a monthly subscription service, automatically self-renewing each month. The subscription may be stopped by simply cancelling at the end of a month.

Public buses, trams, metro trains and light rail are included in the ticket.

First-class carriages in the above are not open to users of the tickets. Other services that are excluded are Intercity Express, Eurocity-Express, Intercity, Eurocity, and Railjet. Private operator FlixTrain is also excluded from the programme.

Deutschlandticket may be used only by the purchaser and the tickets are not transferable.  Each ticket user must have their own ticket.
