Ghana launches 46-day festive season visa

From December 1 to January 15, Ghana will implement a non-pre-approval visa-on-arrival programme for anyone travelling to the country. At the same time, it will encourage Africans and those in the diaspora to visit the country.

“Following consultation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry for the Interior, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Tourism Authority, approval has been given for passengers travelling to Ghana to opt for visa-on-arrival, waiving the requirement for prior approval,” it was noted in statement from the Ministry of Transport.

The Ministry also issued a call for systems to be updated to reflect the new arrangement.

“Those responsible for check-ins and passengers travelling to Ghana are advised not to insist on entry visas prior to their boarding,” it said.

Akwasi Ageyman, GTA CEO, has welcomed the move, saying that it encouraged travellers to take advantage of the remarkable opportunity and to be part of the December in GH (December in Ghana) tourism campaign.

“In line with the objectives of the ‘Beyond the Return’ initiative, this waiver aids in strengthening Ghana’s position as the preferred destination for tourists and investors from the diaspora and beyond. It seeks to deepen the bonds between Ghana and its global community while providing opportunities for cultural exchange and economic growth,” read a statement from the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Several countries on the continent are opening their borders, with Kenya and Rwanda announcing they would allow African passport holders visa-free entry. They join the Seychelles, Gambia, and Benin in their visa-free regulations for African travellers.
