As the US east coast braced itself for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy on Monday (October 29), the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey issued a statement on the transport operations and how they have been affected so far.
In a statement on Monday, the Port Authority said that its airports – John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, Stewart International and LaGuardia airports are open. However it said that air carriers have ceased operations until further notice, and that it was encouraging travellers not to travel to the airports. Rail services on AirTrain JFK and AirTrain Newark has been suspended until further notice.
The Port Authority’s maritime facilities as wells as all public and private bus services have also been closed until further notice.

According to flight tracking site, flightaware.com, over 6,800 flight cancellations were recorded on October 28, while 5 559 flights were due to be cancelled to or from and within the US on October 29. The most affected airport on Monday was set to be Philadelphia (PHL), with 1084 cancellations.
