IATA has urged the EU to extend flexibility measures for the Entry/Exit System (EES) beyond their September 6 expiry, warning that removing them before outstanding issues are resolved could lead to further disruption at European borders.
Earlier this year, the EU allowed Schengen countries to partially suspend EES operations until September, giving them greater flexibility to manage congestion during the peak summer travel period.
Speaking at an IATA media briefing at the Press Club Brussels Europe last week, Senior Vice President, External Affairs at IATA, Thomas Reynaert said the option to partially suspend EES procedures should remain available until the end of the winter season.
However, several sources have indicated that some member states may not enforce biometric checks, according to The Guardian.
