Japan is considering an increase to its departure tax from the current JPY1 000 (R110) to JPY3 000 (R330) per person, after the country’s ruling party approved a resolution last week.
Passengers travelling in business class or higher will be charged JPY5 000 (R550).
The measure aims to address overtourism and will likely be introduced by April next year.
The International Tourist Tax will be levied on all travellers leaving Japan and will be included in the ticket fare.
