More GWM Tanks for South Africa

SOUTH Africa’s vehicle market is about to gain a wider selection of SUVs and premium models as GWM prepares to expand its local portfolio over the next 18 months. The manufacturer has confirmed plans to introduce the Tank 400 and Tank 700 to South Africa, adding to a Tank line-up that currently includes the Tank 300 and Tank 500. The larger Tank 800 is also being considered for the local market, although its introduction has not yet been confirmed. GWM’s Tank 300 is already in use among some car rental operators, with every chance that the rental industry will welcome the new models. The five-seater Tank 400 has been produced in China since 2023 and sits above the Tank 300 in terms of size. Several powertrain options are offered internationally, including petrol, turbodiesel and plug- in hybrid versions. While local specifications have not yet been announced, the 2,4-litre turbodiesel is considered a possible option for South Africa as the engine is already available locally in other GWM models. Further up the range, the five-seater Tank 700 will strengthen GWM’s presence in the large premium SUV segment. A variety of electrified powertrains are offered internationally, while GWM has also developed a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 plug- in hybrid for right-hand-drive export markets. No local launch dates or specifications have yet been confirmed for either model. Premium push GWM is also preparing to move into the luxe market in South Africa, with the introduction into the country of the Wey, its luxury vehicle marque, expected around the middle of 2027. Established in China in 2016, Wey specialises largely in premium crossovers and MPVs, with electrification featuring prominently across its international portfolio. Many of its vehicles also offer three- row seating. GWM has not yet confirmed which Wey models will be introduced locally, although the brand is expected to launch in South Africa with a broader range rather than a single model. The planned introductions will add further choice across South Africa’s growing SUV and premium vehicle segments and could, over time, provide additional options for rental companies looking to diversify fleets across leisure, family and higher-end rental categories.
