A strike by railway unions in Belgium this Wednesday, October 3, is set to disrupt Eurostar passengers travelling between London and Brussels and hit the Thalys high-speed services between France and Germany.
The strike will run for 24 hours from 20h00 GMT on Tuesday, a spokesman for Belgium's socialist FGTB union said on Thursday. Unions are angry at a reorganisation of the state railway company in Belgium. Thalys said that a strike would stop its trains running through Belgium, closing down the entire network.
Eurostar is advising travellers planning to visit Brussels to change their travel dates. The rail operator says that if the industrial action does go ahead it will not run services to and from Brussels from 22h00 CET on October 2, until 22h00 CET on October 3. Services will terminate and start at Lille during this period. Eurostar said it will offer refunds or exchanges free of charge regardless of ticket conditions, but subject to availability on alternative services. A revised timetable will be in operation to and from Lille, and Eurostar advises passengers "to refer to the special timetable which will be published on eurostar.com early next week to find their new departure times and how this may affect onward travel".
