Costing US2,7bn (R46,43bn), the brand-new Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is now open for business.

The largest investment ever undertaken by the Port Authority, the terminal measures 92 903sqm and has 21 gates (with another eight to open over the next few months), four lounges, and four lanes for drop-offs and pick-ups. It is designed to handle 13,6 million passengers every year – four million more than the original terminal, which is due to be demolished.

“There are 14 more screening lanes with the state-of-the-art technology,” says Huntley Lawrence, COO of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “In addition to that, we’ve got 60-plus self-serve kiosks, so customers have multiple options to get processed in.”

Terminal A, 20% larger than its predecessor, is now serving flights from United, JetBlue, American, Air Canada, and Delta.
