Pinterest released its 2024 Summer Travel Report last week, shedding light on the travel trends inspiring users who are planning their next getaway.

The report analyses over one billion travel-related searches over the past year, picking out the keywords emerging as most popular.

Pinterest’s analysts found a distinct shift towards a quieter, more relaxing form of travel that is off the beaten track, with searches for ‘quiet places’ increasing by 50% and searches for ‘calm places’ rising by 42%. In addition, travellers looking for calm escapes are doing so alone, with 35% more searches for solo travel. Users are also gravitating towards digital detoxes this year, as opposed to searching for Instagrammable tourism hotspots, says Pinterest.

Other notable searches on this trend include ‘cabin in the mountains’, which increased 180%. Searches for ‘island life’ grew by 30% and ‘wellness retreat aesthetic’ by 90%. The top destinations for this type of travel were Okinawa in Japan and the English countryside.

Pinterest also observed an increase in searches for mysterious destinations, recording a 240% increase in searches for ‘places on earth that do not feel real’ and a 75% increase in ‘ancient cities’. Top destinations for this trend produced results for Machu Picchu and Edinburgh.

The platform also recorded an increase in searches for adventure travel, with searches for adventure activities increasing by 45%.

Overall, top searched-for destinations on Pinterest include London, South Africa, Santorini and Goa, with a 340% increase in searches for ‘London lifestyle’, 320% more searches for ‘South African food’, 300% growth in searches for ‘Santorini party’, and a 270% increase in searches for ‘Goa nightlife’.
