Train travel round-up: Vienna expands rail connections

Vienna will introduce a new train timetable from December 13, increasing services to Vienna Airport and expanding international connections.

The REX7 regional express will run every 30 minutes throughout the day between Vienna Airport and Fischamend, while the REX8 service between Vienna and Bratislava will increase to an hourly service between 05h00 and midnight.

Additional REX1 trains will also improve afternoon connections between Vienna and Břeclav in the Czech Republic, creating an almost continuous half-hourly service. A new late-evening connection will be introduced between Vienna and Znojmo in the Czech Republic, with an additional Sunday morning service in the opposite direction.

Sydney opens Southwest Metro

Sydney’s new Southwest Metro began passenger services on October 30, connecting through the CBD to the city’s northwest along a continuous 66km Metro line.

The service connects in Bankstown, Punchbowl, Wiley Park, Lakemba, Belmore, Campsie, Canterbury, Hurlstone Park, Dulwich Hill and Marrickville, with trains running every four minutes during weekday peak periods.

The Metro offers 50% more passenger capacity than the former T3 Bankstown Line it replaced, as well as faster journeys and direct connections.
