The UK has confirmed it will introduce an overnight visitor levy in 2028, allowing English regional mayors to charge visitors staying in hotels, B&Bs and holiday accommodation.
According to Business Travel News Europe, the levy is intended to help fund local infrastructure and support regional economic growth. The charge will be discretionary, with individual regions deciding whether to introduce it and how much to charge.
Regional mayors have indicated that they intend to limit the levy to 5%, although the government has not set an official cap.
The measure is expected to affect travel costs from 2028, with further details on implementation and regional arrangements still to be confirmed.
